Budget 2021 Part 2: Expense Reductions

Within the last blog, we spoke on proposed budget cuts within our city budget within the sector called "Efficiencies" that includes adjustments to the way a service is delivered internally and externally to citizens which reflect a commitment to continuous improvement and the efficient use of taxpayer dollars. The next section we will be talking about is Expense Reductions.

The $6.4 million - Expense reductions reflect cost control efforts within the city and generally include reductions to contracts, professional services, travel, and training. Reductions of this nature reflect an ongoing commitment to prudent cost control across the city as a corporation.

The Expense Reduction section includes changes in Communications and Engagement, Community Standards and Neighbourhoods, Corporate Expenditures and Revenues, Economic and Environmental Sustainability, Edmonton Transit Service, Financial Services, Fire Rescue Services, Fleet and Facility Services, Integrated Strategic Development, Open City and Technology, Parks and Road Services, Real Estate, Talent Acquisition, Workplace Safety and Employee Health.

Changes that are relevant to the experiences and services that Edmontonians receive are in the following areas.

Parks and Road Service:

  • Reductions to parks, roads & sidewalks, and bridge maintenance budgets to reflect efficiencies; no service impacts. Additionally a partial reduction in consulting and communication budget.

Net Impact in 2021 ($000’s): $6,395

Net Impact in 2022 ($000’s): $211

Tomorrow, we will be speaking about potential facility closures that I know is of great concern to many people. Hopefully I can ease your mind so that you feel comfortable in this budget process and that we continue having substantial conversations on the services that are valuable to us.
